Andy Warhol Mao (FS II.98), 1972
A controversial figure then and perhaps an even more controversial figure now, Warhol’s Mao, the Former Chairman of the Communist Party of China, brings together the image of totalitarian propaganda and the glammed up colours found in his celebrity art portfolio to demonstrate the cult of personality. Warhol was fascinated by the Chinese ruler, who, at the time, Life magazine had declared the most famous person in the world.
